I've been noticing lately that one of the questions a low of newbies tend to ask is in regards to how to feed the family. They've read the book that accompanies their plan of choice. They understand the do's and dont's, the why's and what not's, but because they are new to this way of life, they can't quite wrap their minds around how to feed their family when they are doing low carb. For some of us that really isn't an issue. We cook for the family the same way we cook for ourselves. And they either take regular lunches to work to get the extra carbs they need, or they snack on carbier choices. But for some, that isn't always an option for whatever reason.
I went to check out the blog of one of my new commenters the other day. It's called Tami's Kitchen Table Talk. And I particularly liked the way she does something called Menu Mondays. Now for myself, I'm not good at sticking to a weekly menu since my health tends to interfere with that more often than not. But I know how well the idea works because I used to do a weekly menu each week for the Boys Home.
What caught my attention at this particular blog, was the way in which she did two menus each week. One for the family, and then one adapted to low carb for herself.
I've been planning on spotlighting this blog ever since, but have been putting it off, because I wanted to take the time to collect for you the links to several weeks' menus, so you could see what I'm talking about. But when I went to Tami's blog this morning, I was completely surprised to see that Tami has now changed her blog format. Or maybe it was always like that and I was just dense the other day, LOL. I don't know.
We have low carb pictures of recipes and menus on the left, and pictures of recipes for the family and their menu on the right. And links to several of her other weeks' menus right there.
A particularly nice set up that you ought to check out.

You can't imagine my surprise when I clicked on your blog to see what you've been up to. I am so honored that you would feature my blog on your blog. Thank you so much!
This topic of "How do I cook for my family while I'm low carbing?" is one of the questions that I answer the most -- and not everyone is so supportive. Making 2 menus each week works for me (at least most of the time). If I'm trying a new recipe, I try really hard to incorporate low carb items into the recipe. If I can't, I try to at least use the main ingredient for my meal, too. There are times when I can't incorporate it or times when I just don't want what they are eating...that's when I stray off and try something new.
More than anything, I'm determined to see this through to lose weight. So if it takes me a little extra time in the kitchen, I'm willing to deal with it. :)
Thanks, again!
Hugs,
Tami
Oh..I forgot, I wanted to let you know that I didn't change the layout of my blog, just the background to lighten it up a bit. I did change some of the featured recipes on the side bars. :) Thanks for noticing it! Sometimes I feel like I talk to myself on there. lol!
Tami,
I have 4 sons, but they are not living at home anymore. I'm sure that if I had kids that were, I'd have to do something more complicated than I'm currently doing.
One of my sons is a strict low carb advocate. Atkins helped him get back into shape after he quit college ball due to the politics going on and took a sit-down type of job. It now helps him keep a healthy weight so he can play "minor" professional baseball.
Another one who lives with him got chubby living with his dad for a couple of years, and knows low carb is how he should be eating. But he just loves his carbs too much. My Atkins' advocate won't allow carby food in the house, so the son who lives with him get's his fix with fast food.
The other two are less-than-normal weight.
Cooking one type of meal works for me, because my husband is extremely supportive - especially with the Celiac. But families with kids are a whole different issue.
Thanx for letting me know about the layout. And thanx for sharing a few tips on how you do things.
I can certainly relate to the feeling that we're talking to ourselves.
The thing about blogging is, unless you're using an analyzer you don't really know how many readers you have. I don't get a lot of comments these days, mostly due to a long stretch where my health interfered with posting. So it's kind of like starting over.
I was surprised recently to find out that I do have a small but adequate following. Enough folks reading to keep me doing this. Comments or not. I'm of the mindset that quite often, we're affecting way more readers than we realize.
